About Me

Loving Your Little Landscape

I have never been a natural gardener. For years, I struggled to keep basic houseplants alive, only to kill them at the first opportunity. It was difficult and stressful to buy a home with a yard, but I knew that I might be able to learn what I was doing wrong and correct the problem. To start off, I focused heavily on the lawn, and tried hard to keep it trimmed and well-maintained. Next, I cleaned up the flowerbeds. It was a lot of work, but I knew that it would pay off in the end. When I was done, my front yard was gorgeous, and guess what--it even stayed alive. This blog is all about loving your little landscape.

Tips For Mowing Your Lawn

by Charlotte White

If you are homeowner, you want your lawn to look great. This means mowing it down so that it looks properly maintained and neat. Here are some tips for mowing your lawn so that it looks great.

1. Leave Clippings on the Lawn

First, make sure that you are discharging the clippings so that they stay on the lawn after you are done mowing. If you notice that they are coming out of your lawn mower in chunks or in rows, you will need to take a rake and spread out the clippings so that they cover the lawn evenly. The reason why you leave the clippings on the lawn is to make sure that the nutrients and nitrogen that the grass clippings contain can be returned to the grass that is still growing. This grass cycling can reduce the amount of fertilizer that you use to encourage your grass to grow strong and healthy.

2. Don't Mow Your Grass in the Exact Same Pattern Each Time

If you mow your grass once a week, try to vary the direction at which each blade of grass is cut each week. For example, if you start at the northwest corner of your lawn on the first week, the following week you need to start at the southwest corner. This will allow you to be sure that you are pushing the grass in the opposite direction. You need to continually be pushing the grass upright and not encouraging it to grow or lean in any particular direction. This can make your lawn look better.

3. Don't Mow During the Hottest Part of the Day

You want to avoid mowing during the hottest part of the day because this can cause heat stress to your lawn, as well as to yourself. If you have sunscreen on and are properly covered, it is fine to mow before noon. Try to avoid mowing between 1 and 3 because this is when many people find that the heat becomes overwhelming, especially because the ground has absorbed the heat from the sun when it was shining in the morning and early afternoon. Mowing in the evening is also a great option. Avoiding heat stress on your grass will allow you to be sure it continues to grow strong.
