About Me

Loving Your Little Landscape

I have never been a natural gardener. For years, I struggled to keep basic houseplants alive, only to kill them at the first opportunity. It was difficult and stressful to buy a home with a yard, but I knew that I might be able to learn what I was doing wrong and correct the problem. To start off, I focused heavily on the lawn, and tried hard to keep it trimmed and well-maintained. Next, I cleaned up the flowerbeds. It was a lot of work, but I knew that it would pay off in the end. When I was done, my front yard was gorgeous, and guess what--it even stayed alive. This blog is all about loving your little landscape.

Improving The Drainage Of Your Landscaping

by Charlotte White

There are many factors that will influence the quality of your property's landscaping. Issues with poor drainage can be a problem that will have a particularly high risk of contributing to several potential problems that could create major issues for the appearance of your property and the health of the plants that are growing on it.

Poor Drainage Can Cause Substantial Health Problems For Plants

If your property has drainage issues, it can create serious health problems for the plants that are growing there. An example of this could be the drainage issues contributing to the roots of your plants rotting or becoming diseased. Eventually, this can actually kill the plants that you are wanting to grow. Over time, this may expose areas of bare soil, which can have the effect of causing the drainage problem to worsen as the plants will no longer be present to absorb much of the water. This can lead to a cycle where drainage issues can worsen and become more difficult to address.

Drainage Issues Can Lead To Foundation Damage

Drainage issues with your landscaping can have impacts on your home. One example of this type of problem could be substantial foundation damage due to the moisture pooling around the base of the home. As this occurs, it can degrade the concrete that was used in the foundation, erode the soil that is supporting the foundation, or even seep into the home itself. The extreme costs that will come with repairing these damages can make the investment that is needed to improve the overall drainage of the property a necessary expense.

Ineffective Drainage Can Reduce The Property's Accessibility

When your property has poor drainage, it will likely develop large puddles of standing water following periods of intense rain. Depending on where these puddles tend to form, they could have a sizable impact on the overall accessibility of the property. In some cases, they may even prevent you from being able to access large sections of your property due to the water and mud being too difficult to traverse. These issues can be especially common for properties that have low-lying areas as the runoff from the rest of the property could flow towards these areas. As a result, the puddles that form could be both larger in size and substantially deeper. These factors could lead to them potentially taking days or longer to recede enough for you to be able to comfortably walk over these areas.
